Jura’s Iris Yang teaches the course on Blockchain at the prestigious Peking University

Recently, Jura’s CEO, Iris Yang was invited at the prestigious Peking University to teach a course on Blockchain to the Turing Class students. This course aimed at exploring the future of blockchain applications. What happens when academic thinking combines with business use cases? Let’s find out.

Blockchain, one of the most cutting-edge technologies of the 21st Century, has been hailed as the “the machine for building trust” by The Economist. Blockchain has also become the front-runner in FinTech Innovation and is disrupting the current socio-economic business models.

The Turing Class is an experimental class at Peking that aims at training highly qualified computer scientists with the goal of challenging the limits and advancing the frontiers of intelligent science. The Turing Class is highly competitive and admits only 30 students per year. Some people in China joke that “the course that takes one year to complete at the Academy of Science and Technology, is to be completed within a month by the students of the Turing Class”.

In 2018, Peking University introduced a blockchain related course that invited top industry practitioners and teachers to help students understand the potential of Blockchain.
Professor Deng Xiaotie heads the Blockchain course. Professor Deng, an ACM Fellow, is a professor at Peking University and an international postdoctoral researcher at the Canadian Natural Science and Engineering Technology Research Council at Simon Fraser University. He holds a PhD from Stanford University with an expertise in the fields of algorithmic game theory, computational finance, and internet economics. He has also taught at the University of Liverpool, the City University of Hong Kong, the University of York, and at the Yuanyuan College of Shanghai Jiaotong University.

“Blockchain technology is another technological explosion after the Internet. As a computer technology model for distributed computing and storage, Blockchain redefines the socio-production relationship. There are many trusts and security-related cost in various fields, such as finance but through blockchain, we can bring great efficiency in industrial applications like cross-border settlement, user privacy protection, and commodity delivery. The industry has an infinite application prospect”
Iris also shared the latest blockchain research results and practical applications. She also indulged the students in the impact analysis of blockchain technology on various aspects of the economy and society.
“The blockchain builds trust between nodes in the business network. This trust can improve the efficiency of resource utilization and can enable suppliers to obtain more raw materials and profits.”
When Iris introduced the application to the supply chain industry, the students presented a couple of scenarios:
1. What to do if a “pear” is registered as an “apple”?
2. In a data mismatch situation, how to ensure the accuracy of the data?
3. How to combine this real and virtual world data?
In response, Iris replied: “This problem can be attributed to a certain degree of commercial evil. The deviation of data entry is not directly related to the blockchain network itself. In this case, we can use the backtracking to accurately locate the source of the error and punishment containment.”
When discussing blockchain application and the sharing economy, Iris shared the business model of Ofo. “Shared bicycles are essential to the shared economy, but this business model is a traditional business model. Only when all resources are on the chain; purchase, lease, maintenance, etc., all are carried out on the chain, and the value is transmitted efficiently through efficient distribution. The spontaneous economy is the future of a truly shared economy.”

In the final session, Iris reviewed the memorabilia of the past year and shared her predictions for the development trend of blockchain technology. She also shared Jura’s mission to realize high-concurrency and self-regulating next-generation commercial blockchain technology solutions through innovative, self-developed modules such as Fusus, PoVRT, DMDS, etc., to build a worldwide industry-wide trusted data exchange value network system.
Through this event, Jura got an opportunity to influence the younger generation of computer scientists and highly encourage them to work towards achieving a truly independent and automated blockchain network.
